Peter Dawson Vs George Baker

Post by Gmemg » Mon Dec 11, 2017 1:15 pm

I was chatting to "the Squire" about the popularity of singers and why Peter Dawson is SO popular ? and why so much better known and far more collected than singers such as George Baker ?

After all they both had LONG careers spanning the same period :

Peter Dawson (1882 - 1961) recorded from 1904 - 1958
George Baker (1885 – 1976) recorded from 1909 - 1962

They certainly recorded the same repertoire and for the same companies - G& S , Concert items, Ballads, Musical Numbers and what were at the time "pop "Songs and yet for some reason Peter Dawson's records are actively sought after - yes even by me ! and oddly his records seem far easier to find than George Bakers but that cannot be the explanation can it ?
