The Wilson Horn Conversion - 1st EMG Gramophone ?

Post by Gmemg » Mon Dec 11, 2017 7:05 pm

This machine turned up in Liverpool with a cut - off Wilson horn attached - it was rejected by "the Leading dealer" but made it's way to the EMG Guru (Who kept it in his shed for years not knowing what it was) then on toe a collector from whom i bought it .

The former owner couldn't work it out but i did !

It'a the FIRST "Wilson Horn Conversion" and was possibly the first External Horn machine created by EMG - it's not well enough made to be a Seymour Product but isn't bad it's just the maker didn't quite understand how it should work !

They took an HMV 510 and removed the original lid anc created the odd one shown - neccessary as the horn is LOW and thus you need the odd canted corners !

The Tonearm is UNIQUE to this machine - not because it fixes upside down - That's what it was made to do and other early EMG's have the same fitting, no it's probably the FIRST Wilson Tonearm made - it's much heavier than standard and longer

The Machine with the whole Lid raised - as can be seen the Motor board is as HMV Made it - apart from the fact that a crude "Square" has been cut around the motor to access it .6

The Tonearm fits though a slot in the Superstructure - as can be seen a larger slot had been cut but then a piece put back in - Not Exactly Chippendale ! 8

The Motorboard from above - showing how little space to get a record in there is ! 9

The Motorboard Closed - the two doors don't quite meet !10

The Dust Cap - this machine would have had something similar but this one came with a machine the EMG Guru Bought, He kept the cap but sold the machine to "gusto" 12

The Tonearm removed - the Conversion Tonearm is seen on the RH Side and is Longer and heavier than the Portable EMG tonearm on the LEft - it's also a different configuration 13

Image

Detail of the construction - the two tonearms are different - one is just suspended but he Portable one has an adjustment 14

The end of the Tonearm with EMG engraved - not cast into it, also the other way up ! 15
