Robert Vollstedt

I have to say that i don;t consider myself an expert in Viennese style music but have listened to an awful lot in my time ! "the Squire" has a wide knowledge on this subject but even he will admit that it's in the last 25 - 30 years that, mainly due tot he Cd and the cheapness of East European Orchestra a massive amount of Viennese style music has been re - recorded, there are massive collections of the Strauss Family works (from the Surviving Manuscripts) and also of The Waldteufels, Ziehrer Etc and even a lot of the more obscure composers

One composer who's music rarely turns up on the 78s i have is Robt Vollstedt, in fact all i knew of his works was "lustige Brude" Which translates as "jolly brothers" "Merry brothers " or "jolly Fellows" then yesterday a Rena Double Face record of C 1907 from the Barn turned up of "Echoes of the Forest" which was excellent but i know of no others that i cna think of - sadly a lot of orchestral music on early 78s is anonymous so we may never know but here are a few

Jolly Brothers

Robert Vollstedt, another German composer who composed very much in the Viennese idiom, was born near Hamburg in Germany but very little is known about his musical education. As principal clarinettist in the Hamburg Opera House orchestra, he remained with them for most of his working career and he must have received some formal training. Although Vollstedt was primarily a march composer, he has been remembered mostly for his waltz Jolly Brothers, which became known internationally. He composed mainly for piano and specialised in dance music of various types, much of it being what we would classify as salon music. However his marches, which have been played around the world, including America, form the bulk of the music for which he became known. They were in a style that can be described as somewhere between the very light and melodic and those for a large military band created by bandmasters such as Carl Teike. Like several noted composers of his era, he was quite well known during his lifetime, but was soon forgotten and today his works are sadly neglected.
