fibre, thorne and steal needles on an early record of c 1910

Post by rgodridge » Fri Feb 09, 2018 12:31 pm

Just a bit of fun, playing a c 1910 bell disc record with first a triangular thorne needle (which didn't sound great) on the hmv no 4 soundbox, then a thorne needle on the no 4, then a thorne and lastly a steal needle on the meltrope 3.

I enjoy these demonstrations you do - you do sound so natural when you do them, I like the Bamboo Fibre needles and find them very reliable IF they are properly dry and kept dry - when playing early and often worn records a little graphite powder or candle wax will make a tremendous difference as will a thorough clean

Playing with a steel needle is fine but often a steel needle will increase the noise as well as the sound so you get clarity but also the crackle ("Clarity & Crackle" - sounds like either a firm of solicitors or some sort of firm providing "Personal Services")

graphite powder! I've not heard of doing that. Is there a difference between that and candle wax where records are concerned, and where do you get your powder from? now that really sounds dodgy

I've not tried the graphite powder myself as i always use wax which i know can be removed with a standard record cleaner but the "dear Chap" told me he used a pencil and putting the record on the turntable and letting it revolve ran the pencil along the grooves to graphite them

and people say i'm mad !

I think that's probbably quite a good idea to be honest!
is there a particular kind of wax you'd use?
