Symphonion - a Massive Motor

Post by Gmemg » Tue Dec 12, 2017 2:23 pm

Some of the early gramophones had incredibly large motors - designed for either Demonstration or for Public use they had to have long playing times between winds. This motor was made by Symphonion of Liepzic C 1910 it was found in a pathetic cabinet gramophone and the only indication that the machine had an unusual motor in it was the fact that it wouldn't play a record as the turntable rubbed on the motorboard

Why ?

The 1" thick motorboard had distorted due to the weight of the motor - 12" wide and 9" high - the springs wouldn't be out of place in a Sympomion Polyphon - notice the crack in the spring barrel !
