"What's This ?" VERY Rare Zonophone machine on Ebay

Post by Gmemg » Fri Mar 02, 2018 8:26 pm

There's a very rare Early Zonophone machine on ebay at the ,moment - the owner hasn't a clue what he has and must be astonished that the machine is now at £350 - OK it's missing the turntable but that's not a major problem and could be solved fairly easily but apart form that it's complete and seemingly ready to go - it's odd Gramtastic hasn't mentioned it nor "the inspector" So i can only assume "Suicidal" Steve TMF Admin want's it ! he certainly wanted the One (complete) shown at the Witney gramophone Gathering which eventually went to me (£250 well spent)

here it is and at LEAST £1200 worth even as it is -MAKE THE CLPGS SCUM & THE RING PAY

Certain correspondants seem to think this is a "soundgen " (Bedford) Snell - Childophone Crapophone - NO it' s not it's a fine machine without a Maggie & Graham brass Horn !

Price is going up though

This is so close to me that it might be in walking distance, not that I'd walk with something like that! but it's rite on my doorstep.
He has no records with it sadly, but would it take a 10 inch turntable? if so I'll view it and try playing it and make a recording.
Another thing, I've let him know what it is and what I think it's worth and NOT to accept any offers to end early so let's hope he listens!

No, it'll need a 7" turntable with a tapering fitting underneath to fit the spindle so pretty specialist and not a spare part you'll find easily but one which would have to be made up

the main problem will be an original Long Throat Zono soundbox but one could be found - my one came complete with the original soundbox so i was very pleased !

Unfortunately there are no records, but he does have another little machine on ebay at the moment, I'm not sure what it is, but comes with a little kid's record so possibly a child's machine and I don't mean Mike!

The other machine is a smallish continental one which winds through a hole in the turntable - i'm never sure if these were intended as children's machines or were just small budget machines for adults either way it won't make as much or be as interesting as the Zono !

i think i have an original advert for something similar

It made over £800 so not a bad price - in former time is would have expected it to have made more but as it is it's no doubt a LOT more than the owner would have expected and a LOT more than it would make at a Proudie SAS sale where "the Ring " Operate !

so if an incomplete one makes £800 what would a complete one like mine make ?

The seller actually told me he was going to put it on buy it now for £75, then thought he'd try it at auction!

Missing the turntable, which being a 7 inch one I would imagine is a very hard part to find, and it still made £800

Amazing but not a unique tale - i once bought a trademark machine from a chap on ebay - He sold me some 7" Zonophone records and said :

"i've got a kids machine you might like, i've shown it to 2 auctioneers and they say it's not worth putting in their sales so would you want it ?"

I asked for pictures and most CERTAINLY wanted it ! I Paid him a fair price and although not perfect i managed to sell it for a decent sum so i think the Auctioneers might have done rather well after all. I suppose Auctioneer's are rather like GPs - they are NOT Specialists and can only , like any of us go on experience of what they've seen and some have seen rather more than others .
