"The gramophone" as Gay Contact magazine

Post by Gmemg » Tue Dec 12, 2017 9:32 pm

Some years ago a delightful and highly amusing Gay man pointed out to me that the back pages of "the Gramophone" magazine were used in the 1950's by Gay men as a sort of contact magazine (whatever that might be - Ed)

i thought he was joking - he then provided proof !

it's possible some are entirely innocent - and thus might have lead to all kinds of misunderstandings but some are definitely very strangely phrased !

Here are some of the adverts from the personal Columns in 1952 - more to follow as i feel they are historically interesting, some of the "code" words are :

"Confirmed Bachelor"
"interested in Arts"
"Record Collector - photo appreciated" (of what - the records ?)
"robust physique & personality essential" that must mean "a Bit of Rough !"
"Interested in Wagner" (Likes Uniforms or horned helmets ?)
"interested in School Life " (err..............)
"Motor Cycling "Leatherman required ?)

Corruption in the CLPGS :
The Seven Social Sins are:
Wealth without work. Pleasure without conscience. Knowledge without character .Commerce without morality. Science without humanity. Worship without sacrifice. Politics without principle.

Money. Greed. Naivety. Falsehoods. Exploitation. Welcome to the wonderful world of gramophones!
